Tool & Die Room Set Up / Operator

Tasks

• Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
• Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabrication tools, dies, or assemblies.
• Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
• Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
• Fit assemble pats to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
• Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary.
• Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
• Calculate dimensions and tolerance using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and digital or dial calipers.
• Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machine work.
• Load material or work pieces into machines and unload product and waste.
• File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together.
• Smooth and polish flat an contoured conformity, and defects
• Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour, conformity, and defects.
• Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of work.
• Understand customer drawings:  dimensions, features, written notes, etc.
• Confer with engineering, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information and to ensure that the new programs or machinery will function properly, and that the output will meet specifications.
• Complete routine paper work, including inspection records, check sheets, and quality non-conformance tags.
• Operate a pallet jack and forklift.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or General Education Degree equivalent with Post-secondary school certification;  minimum five years of related work experience, training, or equivalent combination.
• Must have knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Solidworks and AutoCad software.
• Must possess effective written and oral communication skills and be able to handle multiple projects within limited time frames.

• Able to apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, machine procedures, to operate machines and diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
• Layout, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts.
• Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled.
• Actively listen to others, giving full attention to what others are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate.

• Intermediate print reading experience.

Physical Requirements

• Primary working position is with arms extended in front of the body with upper body bent forward.
• 95% of the job requires standing and moving around the equipment, 5% of the job requires assuming awkward positions including kneeling, squatting, or reaching.
• Material movement requires lifting, carrying, twisting/reaching, pushing and pulling.
• The lifting range is from floor level to 64”.
• Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. with 90% of items weighing between 5 and 30 lbs.  Lifting aids are available for items weighing over 40 lbs.
