Production Machining Set Up / Operator

Tasks

• Set up, adjust and operate all of the basic machines tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
• Operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts.
• Calculate dimensions and tolerance using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and digital or dial calipers.
• Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
• Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
• Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machine work.
• Machine parts and specifications using machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
• Understand customer drawings:  dimensions, features, written notes, etc.
• Provide feedback to supervisor, engineering as to fit, tolerance, appearance or questionable procedures and practices
• Operate manual and automatic equipment.
• Read, understand, and follow drawings, job cards, and work instructions to determine specifications, locations of product features, and customer special instructions.
• Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information and to ensure that the new programs or machinery will function properly, and that the output will meet specifications.
• Complete routine paper work, including inspection records, check sheets, and quality non-conformance tags.
• Study sample parts, prints, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences to operation needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
• Operate a pallet jack and forklift.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or General Education Degree equivalent with Post-secondary school certification;  minimum three years of related work experience, training, or equivalent combination.
• Must have knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Solidworks and AutoCad software.
• Must possess effective written and oral communication skills and be able to handle multiple projects within limited time frames.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Able to conduct inspection of products to evaluate conformance to quality, appearance, or performance standards.
• Able to apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, machine procedures, to operate machines and diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
• Layout, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts.
• Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled.
• Actively listen to others, giving full attention to what others are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate.
• Determine the kinds of tools and equipment needed to do a job and elect equipment accordingly.

• Precision control demonstrated by the ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine to exact positions.
• Dexterity demonstrated by the ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or place objects.
• Intermediate print reading experience.

Physical Requirements

• Primary working position is with arms extended in front of the body with upper body bent forward.
• 95% of the job requires standing and moving around the equipment, 5% of the job requires assuming awkward positions including kneeling, squatting, or reaching.
• Material movement requires lifting, carrying, twisting/reaching, pushing and pulling.
• The lifting range is from floor level to 64”.
• Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. with 90% of items weighing between 5 and 30 lbs.  Lifting aids are available for items weighing over 40 lbs.
