Controls Technician

Troubleshoot and maintain controls components and systems for production and associated utility equipment to ensure highest reliability, proper line performance, and safe operation.  Coordinates electrical PM programs, and makes complex changes in PLC, HMI, and Servo Drive Programming.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of National Electrical Code.
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting of process equipment.
  • Develops and has an understanding of the process and operations to effectively assist in troubleshooting and identifying the root cause.
  • Makes critical  decisions to proactively avoid downtime, quality, scrap, and safety problems based on extensive experience of the machine processes and controls systems.
  • Makes complex program modifications in PLC’s logic, HMI’s programs and servo controller logic to improve equipment performance. Works jointly with control engineering, operators, and production management to implement changes. 
  • Will develop and demonstrate expertise in precision,
    preventive, and predictive maintenance as well as root cause failure analysis.
  • Manages all PLC, Servo and HMI programs and changes as well as electrical documentation.  Ensures that they are all accurate, updated, available to the technicians and archived at regular intervals.  Works with Controls Engineers to do the same on DCS systems.

Additional Success Skills Needed

  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory and principles of operation, PLC (and DCS if required) based hardware and software.
  • Ability to make quick and accurate decisions and repairs as needed.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associates Degree in electronics, computer science or related field plus 5 years industrial electrical experience, or a Bachelors degree in electronics or computer science with at least 3 years industrial experience preferred.
